Profile
Michael is based in Winchester and Head of Art School at Winchester College.
He studied Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University, later returning to gain an MA in Education, focusing on the teaching of art. Michael’s teaching informs his own practice and vice versa.
Fascinated by narratives of time and place, his work is informed by experiences of remote rural environments where tidal cycles, prevailing weather and changing light conditions imprint memories, influencing the recall of a specific place.
Rooted in mark-making and drawing, Michael examines the relationship between visual source material, recalled imagery and experiences recorded in words. By exploring shifting perceptions of memory and past subliminal influences, he looks at the past through the lens of the present.
Alongside his fine art practice and teaching career, Michael has also been artist in residence at Brentford Football Club. He has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, both in solo and group exhibitions.
Coastal Gallery is delighted to feature a selection of Michael’s work, particularly pieces inspired by the Isle of Wight.
