INTRODUCING MICHAEL BRUZON

Profile
Michael is based in Winchester and Head of Art School at Winchester College.
He studied Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University, later returning to gain an MA in Education, focusing on the teaching of art. Michael’s teaching informs his own practice and vice versa.
Fascinated by narratives of time and place, his work is informed by experiences of remote rural environments where tidal cycles, prevailing weather and changing light conditions imprint memories, influencing the recall of a specific place.
Rooted in mark-making and drawing, Michael examines the relationship between visual source material, recalled imagery and experiences recorded in words. By exploring shifting perceptions of memory and past subliminal influences, he looks at the past through the lens of the present.
Alongside his fine art practice and teaching career, Michael has also been artist in residence at Brentford Football Club. He has exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, both in solo and group exhibitions.
Coastal Gallery is delighted to feature a selection of Michael’s work, particularly pieces inspired by the Isle of Wight.

Coastal Gallery Sponsors St Barbe Open Exhibition

Each year hundreds of artworks are submitted to be considered by the panel of professional artists who select the exhibition and award the prizes. St Barbe is proud to provide this showcase for the wonderful creations of our local artistic community.
Despite two years of lockdowns and disruption the St Barbe Open has continued and returns this spring for its 21st showing. In the unprecedented circumstances of 2020 and 2021 the Open has given local artists a chance to display the fruits of their creativity during enforced periods of isolation. Last year works referenced the challenges of lockdown and were inspired by the wonders of nature that we have the good fortune to be surrounded by here in the New Forest.
The exhibition is open to any artist, amateur or professional, who can submit up to two paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, ceramics or textile works. Usually around 80 are selected and shown to stunning effect in St Barbe’s national-standard galleries. There is no theme and the judges only selection criterion is quality. A wide range of subjects and media is guaranteed including the beautiful, the strange and the humorous.
Prizes sponsored by Kate Welsh, Coastal Gallery and Beaulieu Fine Arts are awarded for the best print, abstract and work by a non-professional artist, while the Lymington Business Centre Award gives all exhibition visitors a chance to vote for the People’s Choice prize.
For the last three years the museum has also run a Young Artist’s Open which welcomes entrants from a few months to eighteen years old to exhibit alongside the adult entries, encouraging our young people to get creative from their earliest years. Long-time St Barbe supporter Gordon Young generously offers four ‘Ted Marsh Awards’ in cash and artists materials in memory of the museum’s founding chairman.

John Hansard Gallery : Larry Achiampong online exhibition 14-30 September

Larry AchiampongRelic 0 Online Exhibition14 – 30 September

Taking place across various landscapes and locations, this speculative project builds upon a postcolonial perspective informed by technology, agency and the body, and narratives of migration.
The series builds upon ideas in Larry Achiampong’s practice whilst taking new approaches, marrying linguistic threads and an original synth-based soundtrack with open cinematic landscapes.
At an unspecified future point in time, the African Union has created the Relic Travellers’ Alliance. Amongst an ambitious set of new initiatives the programme was formed to equip Relic Travellers with space-travelling-technology. The sole purpose of this initiative was for Relic Travellers to venture outside of the African Union to retrieve vocal information left by those whom had been historically oppressed as a result of political systems such as colonisation, capitalism and globalisation. These uncovered testimonies are collected and used as a basis for the African Union to responsibly govern the future informed by a bottom-up perspective.
Relic 0, which is the prelude to the series, is a short film that moves between African and Western based vistas and focuses on specific architectures of colonialism as delivered by an anonymous narrator. These discoveries deliver poetic moments of the sublime met with increasingly harrowing tales of trauma – speaking to the sinister way that states of anxiety, fear and displacement are both generated and policed in postcolonial society. The throb of the electronic score and ringing clarity of the narrator’s testimony usher in a new landscape and temporality, born from cracks in a traumatised, apocalyptic present.
This October we shall be premiering Reliquary 2 by Larry Achiampong, the latest in the Relic Traveller series. Reliquary 2 will be available to stream online via our website from 1 October 2020 – 31 January 2021.

Paul Bennett – NEW ARRIVALS !

Paul graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2001. As he puts it, he then ‘fell into Graphic Design’ for several years before setting up a painting studio by Kew Bridge in London.
After several successful exhibitions, Paul became a full-time professional Fine Artist working, at first, on portraiture and then experimenting with abstract seascapes and landscapes. After a decade in London, he relocated to the Lake District with his family and gains much inspiration from the locality.
Paul’s seascapes and landscapes are inspired by the memories and experiences of a place, ‘an eclectic synthesis of place, weather and season’. Back in the studio, Paul sometimes uses photography as reference material for initial mark-making and ideas. He uses oil paint, creating depth through layers of sparingly applied pigment.
‘The paint is applied in this way to give the artwork itself a narrative and history, where the processes of its creation can be glimpsed at in places – not dissimilar to the way in which memory deals with the hazy recollection of a place once visited’
Coastal Gallery www.coastal-gallery.co.uk<www.coastal-gallery.co.uk> is delighted to feature Paul’s subtly evocative seascapes. Please contact us for prices and availability.

Jane Emberson at Coastal Gallery Lymington

Abstract Artist
Jane studied Fine Art at Winchester School of Art. She combines the themes of nature and mythology to create a unique view of the landscape. Many years spent sailing around Mediterranean coastlines and islands have played a major part in Jane’s work as she continues to explore and express the depiction of her surroundings.
Using a mixture of poured paint and gloss mediums on canvas, Jane invites the viewer to enter a fantastic world of amorphous shapes and organic patterns. Combined with shockingly vivid colours, Jane captures the essence and dynamism of the natural world as she sees it.
Coastal Gallery is delighted to feature Jane’s unique work.
