STARTING A COLLECTION

Starting a collection of contemporary art can be a daunting task. Questions of taste, meaning and even conservation can all become part of what may appear a task reserved for experts only. Today we have an incredible number of artists, not to mention a plethora of commercial galleries and online companies, all offering a bewildering variety of art for sale. The great diversity and pace of today’s artistic trends, along with the steady flow of media reports about dizzying prices, can present today’s would-be collector with a huge array of options. From sculptures and paintings to posters, from videos and performances to publications, the diverse and eclectic nature of contemporary aesthetics can for many seem frightening, making an objective valuation a tricky task.
The key to successfully start building a contemporary art collection lies in seeing the abundance of choice as a positive and enriching aspect.
The good news is that the art market needs new collectors and they are expected to start small. The first step is to establish a knowledge base and set your personal preferences. Museums, art institutions, non-commercial and prominent art galleries alike are entities one can rely on when getting to know art movements, media, trends, and your own sense of taste. Visiting art exhibitions, art fairs, talks and events is certainly a step towards identifying artists that you have an affinity for. The more you look, the better you will become in spotting the details that characterise iconic works which may rise in value. You will soon find yourself capturing the similarities found in the colour palette of seemingly different works and understanding the shared ideas that contemporary artists refer to in their work. It will help to train the eye, allowing for more than just visual appeal to inform your decision. Many works can be visually stunning, yet it is equally important to assess its originality and artistic intention.

WHY ART MAKES A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT

People have been exchanging Christmas gifts for a very long time. The gesture of finding, preparing and bestowing something of value to family and friends is something that is honoured by people all over the world.
Finding the perfect gift for our loved ones can be very fulfilling and a carefully chosen work of art could be just the right thing.
Art is Unique
An original work of art is unique, no one else has it, this is part of the joy of owning original art rather than an off the shelf piece from a major retailer.
Many of us find it difficult to find a gift which is really meaningful. Buying original art as a gift isn’t always easy but it can demonstrate to the recipient that you have put genuine thought and care into picking something unique that they will love.
Original art is as unique as the person who will receive it. When buying for someone else it is really important to think carefully about that person and their individuality rather than thinking of your own preferences.
A gift that is enduring
Christmas presents are often thrown away or lost at the back of a cupboard soon after being received. We feel under so much pressure to buy something special and meaningful. Sometimes, we are left feeling guilty that we are adding to the mass production of goods for people who already seem to have everything they need.
A work of art isn’t just for Christmas. ‘Salvator Mundi’ by Leonardo da Vinci was sold last year at Christie’s New York more than 500 years after it was painted. You may not be buying a da Vinci but the great thing about buying artwork is that it may appreciate in value. Unlike furniture, artwork typically doesn’t lose its value because it has been pre-owned. The artwork may be worth more after years hanging on the wall than it was worth when first bought.
Support local business and artists
Buying from local galleries is a way of supporting local small business and boosting the local economy and having local art galleries really adds to the unique identity of an area.
Buying from local small businesses means that you can get to know the people behind the product and you are likely to be dealing directly with the business owner so expect the best service ever.

LONDON EXHIBITIONS / TATE MODERN

* Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Tate Modern
A retrospective of an avant-garde leader of the abstract movement
As well as her era-defining turned-wood Dada Heads, her involvement in the Parisian<www.cntraveller.com/gallery/paris-hotels> art scene and her geometric compositions, Sophie Taeuber-Arp is most remarkable for taking her artistic expression on an experimental journey that travelled through textiles, marionettes, sculpture, collage, embroidery and interiors<www.cntraveller.com/gallery/golden-interiors-around-the-world>. Constantly – and often controversially – pushing the boundaries of art, design<www.cntraveller.com/gallery/green-interior-design> and craft, her multidisciplinary approach to these mediums meant she was also pushing her own boundaries. This posthumous exhibition explores that sense of being perpetually in development – unfinished, open-ended and leaving space for those that follow in her footsteps.
